NIN is definitely one of my biggest musical inspirations. Reznor puts so much detail into
his production and song writing that I find it to be the most inspiring and admirable way of executing the process. So, I did not just want to do some bootleg remix. I wanted
to completely cover a NIN song. I wanted it to be a 100 percent my take on it. When I decided on doing Hurt I knew it would be challenging, but I also knew it was one that I could completely make sound different. During the process of making the track I noticed it started going in a very different direction than my tracks normally do. It sounded happy. I always go into the studio with no real idea of what I’m working on and what it will sound like. I literally just start with a bass line or lead and let the session take a life of its own. So, I kept with the flow. Besides the arpeggiated bass synth, I used strings instead of synth strings or pads. I used bells and grand piano sounds instead of the more traditional electro sound and I went with more with instrument sounds. The lead synth gives it a bright, kind of funky melody. Its totally different than any track of mine y'all have heard and I am really proud of it because of the fact that I feel it shows my range as a producer and because I turned one of the darkest, most painful songs ever written into this.
